Michael's Fishing Resume and Bragging Rights
- 2nd Place Finish, Nov 9-10th, 2013 Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce Rockfish Tournament, $100, 600 points, Team Marleigh II
Michael has participated in Special Olympics sports since the age of 10 (he is now 25). He currently plays soccer, basketball, and softball. Michael is an experienced avid freshwater and saltwater fisherman. His freshwater experience ranges from spyder fishing* for crappie in the Potomac, to smallmouth bass on the Shenandoah, and largemouth bass fishing in the Potomac. His saltwater experience includes surf fishing at Point Lookout State Park for croaker, spot, and bluefish; surf fishing in Duck NC for croaker and spot, charter fishing out of Oregon Inlet for Spanish mackerel and bluefish, and charter fishing out of the Rod and Reel in Maryland for striped bass. The Hoyts employ the head boat "Morningstar" out of Ocean City Maryland.
Michael is best known for out fishing his father Jim. On his last trip on the Morningstar in late May for sea bass, his father Jim finally thought he had him. Jim was slaying them and was beating Michael two fish to one in quantity and size as well. The captain of the Morningstar decided to pull anchor and drift for the last 1 1/2 hours. Jim asked the captain about the possibility of catching flounder? The captain said flounder would not show up this far out for another two weeks... about 10 minutes later, Michael pulled up a 24 inch doormat flounder!
Jim made a bet with Michael that he would not be able catch another one. Sure enough, five minutes later, Michael pulls out another flounder. They were the only two flounder caught on the trip. When we crew returned to the port, a writer for the local paper was there. Michael was credited having caught the first keeper flounder of the season off of the Morningstar. They took his picture and he was in the paper the next week!
Additional fishing exploits by Michael includes catching a 7 pound catfish while spyder fishing for crappie. His personal best rockfish is a 36” striper caught on a charter while fishing on the Chesapeake Bay with his cousins. The last fishing trip out of Oregon Inlet he battled 15-30 lb Amberjacks. His had to help him with those and after six of those they were exhausted and done.
During the duos last largemouth fishing trip on the Potomac Jim was once again beating his son. Jim had caught a nice bass early in the trip. Jim could sense his luck would not hold up. Their experienced fishing guide, Teddy Carr, who also was familiar with Michael’s competitive history, looked at Michael and said, “well I guess he beat you this time”. On the next cast Michael hooked and landed a 5 lb largemouth bass to beat his dad once again.
* Spyder fishing is when you use long fiberglass pole-old days would have been cane pole. No reel, only line, bobber, and hook -mano a mano.
Esteemed Character Traits
It is clear to all that Michael exhibits the quality of hardiness and humor. During CBCC Rockfish Tournament, he rose early with his dad to be on the road by 4:00 AM both Saturday and Sunday of the tournament. The temperatures began in the 30s the first day of the tournament, but Michael stormed on to the Marleigh II like a trooper for two rigorous days of fishing. Not many people can do that, which is why Special Angler gives Michael top billing for Hardiness.
Awareness Cause
